Customer Profile:

Located in St. Paul Minnesota, the Industrial Waste & Pollution Prevention (IWPP) section of the Metropolitan Council Environmental Services Division monitors and regulates industrial discharges to the sewer system to ensure compliance with local and federal regulations. The IWPP Section also responds to community sewer issues like spills. These functions protect MCES and community collection/treatment facilities, process efficiency, operating personnel and the environment.

Goal:

Improve office lighting aesthetics and light quality with a solution that also saves energy.

Assessment:

IWPP’s office had 2×2 and 2×4 lay-in fixtures with T12 lamps. The fixture housings were in good shape, but the lenses were faded therefore affecting the light output and aesthetics of the office. In addition T12 lamps and ballasts have been phased out of production due to their inefficiencies so at some point IWPP would have to replace those.

Solution:

Retrofit the 2×2 and 2×4 T12 fluorescent fixtures with an LED direct/indirect troffer retrofit kit. The reason for the direct/indirect light source is to provide a more uniform level of illumination.

Results:

The LED retrofit kits improved aesthetics dramatically and light levels by over 30% while saving 78% in energy costs. The look of the new 2×2 and 2×4 LED troffer fixtures is more modern and pleasant, and because the light source is direct/indirect the overall lighting is more balanced and complete throughout the office. In addition the LED retrofit kits are capable of dimming and won’t have to be maintained for well over 5 years.

The previous 2×4 fluorescent fixtures used 168 watts while the 2×4 LED retrofit kits uses just 41 watts. The fluorescent 2×2 fixtures were at 84 watts and the 2×2 LED retrofit kit have brought them down to 36 watts. This huge reduction in energy savings and a sizable rebate from Xcel Energy means IWPP will reach payback in less than three years!
