Church School Gymnasium Lighting Case Study: Retrofit from CFL to LED

Customer Profile:

St. Casimir Parish of St. Paul was established in 1892. The first building housed both a church and a school. A new Romanesque church was blessed by Archbishop John Ireland in 1904. The current school was built in 1960.

Goal:

In 2015, Premier Lighting completed an LED retrofit of the sanctuary. Recently we were asked to review LED options for the church school gymnasium for improved lighting, energy and maintenance savings.

Solution:

Premier reviewed the current lighting situation which was comprised of 24 fixtures, each with 8 – 42W CFL lamps. These fixtures only provided 15 footcandles and were a maintenance nightmare! Premier did a lighting layout with 24 new 95W LED fixtures for church administrators to review. Following approval of the project, Premier coordinated the entire project from ordering, installation and rebate paperwork.

Results:

The outcome of the project was an increase in footcandle levels to approximately 68 FC! The energy savings are $1,354 annually and the maintenance savings $2,415 annually. Those savings, along with a utility rebate resulted in a return on investment of only 2.1 years. Additionally, the low profile of the new LED fixtures keep them out of the way for gym activities (see photo). Further, the facility manager was delighted not to have to rent a lift to replace failing CFL lamps and ballasts.
