Replacing PLL-55W with Ballast Bypass 17W LED PLL Case Study

Customer Profile:

Zion Lutheran Church was founded in 1870. The congregation began as a mission for the Swedish Lutheran immigrants. Today Zion Lutheran Church is a faith community of 3100 people of all ages and walks of life. Each weekend Zion worships an average of 1000 over the four weekend services.

Goal:

The gym at Zion Lutheran Church had 2×2 fixtures with five PLL bulbs and multiple ballasts. Many of these lamps and ballasts were failing, resulting in outages and flickering problems. Meanwhile, they were updating the flooring and sound panels and wanted to upgrade the lighting in the process.

Before/After: 55W PLL (fixture on left), 17W PLL (fixture on right)

Results:

Given the ballast problems, it was decided that 17W Type B LED PLL lamps would be best as they would bypass the ballasts and wire direct. Given the outages previously, this resulted in a much cleaner, consistent light for each fixture. Recessed cans were also retrofitted from 100W A19 lamps to 14W LED PAR38 lamps for extra light when needed or as accent lighting when the panels aren’t on. Light levels improved while saving 69% on energy usage.
