GE Current is ready for the new year with some amazing new additions to their LED HID replacement line! Previously GE’s LED HID cobs featured active cooling, meaning a fan was working to maintain a workable temperature for the bulb to survive. They now have an extensive passive cooling line of LED HID replacement lamps in ED17, ED23.5 and ED28 sizes!
Per the image above, you can see how crucial lamp size is in this category of lights. Most competitors that put out LED Cobs create bulbs that are far too long to fit in the existing fixtures, resulting in install frustrations and often times replacing fixtures entirely when they could have been retrofit to an LED bulb. GE Current has always modeled their LED HID bulbs after the traditional ANSI sizing to ensure it will fit and match light levels.

The benefit of an active cooling system is that GE Current can pack more punch in a lamp. But their passive cooling LED HID lamps still match or exceed the lumen levels of traditional sources and they operate at a much quieter level which can be important factor in low-hanging applications. Electronic thermal management keeps the lamps operating efficiently as they can function anywhere between -40°C to 50°C.
Both styles (passive and active cooling) feature color and power-select technology, giving the user three light levels to choose from! The ED17 passive lamps for example can toggle between 13W, 19W and 25W to reach anywhere from 2300 to 4000 lumens, replacing 35W-70W HID sources. The ED23.5 replacement lamps have a wattage select of 32W, 39W or 46W (up to 7500 lumens) for replacing 70W HPS to 175W Metal Halides. Meanwhile the ED28 replacement lamps can choose between 46W, 58W and 70W, reaching lumen levels of 8400-12,000 lumens in order to replace 250W+ HID sources!

GE has it all figured out with the color temp options. They have their standard CCT selectable lamps between 3000K, 4000K, 5000K but now they have a highly sought-after HPS-like 1800K, 2200K, and 2700K option! See the image above – look familiar? This is what most HID to LED cob retrofits looked like when GEN1 LED cobs came to the market around 2014-2017. All these LED lamps were 4000K cool white or 5000K daylight. Now there is a Dark-Sky Friendly LED option with GE’s 1800K, 2200K and 2700K HID LED lamps in ED17 and ED28 bases to maintain the warm look from traditional outdoor lighting sources while saving energy with LED. It is extremely rare to find HPS LED replacement lamps in these color temps let alone LED lamps that are color-selectable in this range!
GE made retrofitting HID’s even easier by including base adapters. GE’s ED17 lamp for example comes in an E26 standard base, but they also include an E26->E39 adapter. Same goes for the ED23.5 and ED28 lamps – normally EX39 mogul base, they also come with an EX39->E26 adapter for replacing standard base lamps too. This makes is all the more likely that everything will go smoothly in the field during a retrofit installation because the last thing you need is a lamp that won’t fit, has the wrong base or a light level that doesn’t match!
With GE’s CCT and Power Select technology in their LED HID’s, there are not many SKU’s you need to know!
