Customer Profile:
Target Field, built in downtown Minneapolis in 2010, is home to the Minnesota Twins and is used as a venue for many other events. It was rated the as the #1 baseball viewing experience in the country in it’s opening year.
Goal:
Despite the stadium being new, inefficient metal halides were present in various parts of the stadium and needed to be switched out to LED. These spots included the underground parking garage and the bus loading area, which were the focus of this project.
Assessment:
The fixtures in the target areas were being lit with 175 watt metal halide bulbs. These metal halides only have a life span of 20,000 hours and require use of a ballast to function, all of which add up to exorbitant maintenance costs. In addition, the light levels they produce quickly deteriorate over time, to the tune of a 60% loss in lumens. As these light levels fade, the color of the lamps change as well.
Solution:
Replacing the metal halides was a foregone conclusion, but finding the ideal replacement both in terms of light levels and energy efficiency was paramount. Instead of retrofitting the fixtures, new LED Albeo high bay fixtures were proposed. These new LED fixtures would last nearly 100,000 hours and provide much more consistent light levels.
Results:
The new Albeo LED High Bays not only reduced energy usage by 60%, but upped light levels by 20%. Their 100,000 life expectancy is five times greater than that of their predecessors. They also do not have the sharp aging signs seen in metal halides, from quick and drastic loss of light levels to color change. No warm-up necessary when turning the lights on as they are instant on/off.
