Goal:
Premier Lighting had retrofitted Frattalone’s lighting from 400 watt metal halides to 6-lamp T8 fluorescent fixtures back in 2007. LED T8 lighting was not a viable option at that point, but with the recent advancements in LED technology it was time to come back in and see if retrofitting those fluorescent T8 lamps to LED made sense.
Assessment:
The 2007 HID-to-Fluorescent retrofit improved Frattalone’s lighting drastically. The energy and maintenance savings that were gained allowed them to reach payback for the project in just over a year. But being that eight years had passed since the first retrofit, the fluorescent T8 lamps and ballasts were beginning to die out, making it tough to know if they should replace the ballasts, lamps, or both. This resulted in nagging maintenance issues needing to be done to keep the six-lamp fluorescent T8 fixtures going.
Solution:
With the fluorescent ballasts being over five years old, it was a simple choice to replace them with Type B LED T8 bulbs that bypass the ballast. In this retrofit, the fluorescent bulbs were taken out, the ballasts were removed, the sockets were changed and LED T8 lamps were installed directly to the line voltage in the fixtures. This would ensure that there would be one failure point in these 6-lamp fixtures – the bulbs themselves.

Results:
The fluorescent lamps and ballasts were taken out and replaced with 18 watt LED T8 lamps. The new LED bulbs have an average lifespan of 50,000 hours, so maintenance will not be an issue for some time. The fluorescent ballasts Frattalone was using in these fixtures were high ballast factor. This meant the 32 watt fluorescent lamps were actually using up 36+ watts each. So energy savings were at over 50%, and combined with the maintenance savings from going to LED, Frattalone was again able to retrofit their lighting with a payback just over a year (again).
